The Dirty Truth: Why Your Hairbrush Needs a Deep Clean—And How to Do It Right

How to Properly Clean Your Hairbrush: A Step-by-Step Guide

Let’s be honest: how often do you clean your hairbrush? If your answer is “not often” or “never,” you’re not alone! But here’s the thing—a clean hairbrush is a must for keeping your hair healthy and looking its best. Over time, your brush collects hair, oils, product build-up, and even dust. Regular cleaning not only extends the life of your brush but also ensures that all your hair care efforts don’t go to waste.

So, let’s walk through how to give your hairbrush the TLC it deserves.

Why Bother Cleaning Your Hairbrush?

You might be wondering why this is even necessary. Well, imagine you’ve just washed your hair, and it’s feeling fresh and fabulous. Then you go and brush it with a tool that’s full of old product, dust, and oils—yikes! That’s a surefire way to undo all that good work. Keeping your hairbrush clean helps your hair stay cleaner, shinier, and healthier.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • A bowl or sink with warm water

  • Gentle shampoo or liquid soap

  • An old toothbrush

  • A towel

Pro Tip: If you’re using a Tangle Teezer, Denman, or Framar brush (which we proudly stock!), these steps will work perfectly. Each of these brands makes high-quality brushes that are easy to clean and maintain.

Step 1: Say Goodbye to Stray Hairs

Start by removing any hair that’s tangled in the bristles. You can do this with your fingers or a comb. The more often you do this, the easier it’ll be to keep your brush clean in the long run.

Step 2: Make a Soapy Bath

Fill a bowl or your sink with warm water and add a few drops of gentle shampoo or liquid soap. This will break down any oils or residue that’s built up on the bristles. If you’re using a wooden-handled brush, like some Denman brushes, be careful not to soak the handle.

Step 3: Time for a Soak

Submerge your brush in the soapy water and let it soak for about 5-10 minutes. This is where the magic happens—the warm water will loosen up all the gunk hiding in your brush.

Step 4: Scrub-a-Dub-Dub

Grab an old toothbrush and give the bristles a good scrub. Focus on the base of the bristles where product build-up tends to hide. This step is key to making sure your brush is as clean as new.

Step 5: Rinse and Shine

Rinse your brush under running water to wash away all the soap and residue. Make sure there’s no soapy film left behind—that could end up in your hair the next time you brush.

Step 6: Let It Dry

Gently shake out any excess water and lay your brush bristle-side down on a towel to dry. This helps prevent water from seeping into the handle, especially important for wooden brushes.

How Often Should You Do This?

Aim to clean your hairbrush at least once a month. If you use a lot of styling products or have particularly oily hair, you might want to do it more often. Trust us, your hair will thank you!
